The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#45)
Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.
This one came from a large lot of Kodachrome photograph slides. Most of them were labeled "Colorado, 1956".
I posted this photo on The Psychogenealogist Facebook Page and within a few hours an astute observer commented with the following photo.
Here is what he had to say about his research process:
I looked at the front of the buildings to see if I could make out any specific identifiers. I zeroed in on the "Harris Block" that I noted at the top of the middle building. I searched Google under "Harris Block Building Colorado" and segmented my Google search into images. Looked for similarities in any of the Harris Block buildings that came up and bam.. Found a match.. ;) Figured if nothing else some local historical organization might have some info out there online.
And there you go! With a keen eye and Google the sky is the limit. I love these yesterday and today photo comparison. For another one like it check out The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#36).
Finally, here is another GORGEOUS street shot from the same set of Kodachrome photo slides in 1956. I just love the store fronts and signs, especially the restaurant.
Questions:
- What is the oldest street scene photograph you have right now?
- Use a google image or map search to see if you can find the same scene from today. What did you come up with?
- Imagine yourself strolling this street in 1956. What would you think, feel, and wonder about as you do?
- Who in your family might have walked this very street?
Do you have an old photograph or a genealogical story that you would like to share? I am happy to consider guest submissions for possible Pic of the Week or other blog posts in the future. Send an email to info@psychogenealogist.com for more information.
