The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#47)
Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.
Here is another photograph from my personal archive. It came from a large stash of photos that belonged to my great grandmother, Ida (Rhoads) Sears (1900-2002).
I believe it is a photo of John Edward Campbell (1892-1959). He was the husband of my 2nd great aunt Amanda Alice (Rhoads) Campbell (1895-1988). She was the sister of my great grandmother. I believe the girl is "Uncle Ed's" granddaughter, Maryann Rukamp, though I am not positive of this.
This photo was unique in that it was among others that were much older than it. I have some memories of my 2nd great Amanda, but Uncle Ed died long before I was born.
I liked this photo for it's obvious cuteness. I also liked it for what it told me about who my great grandmother was close with. In going through her old photos I have really learned a lot about the people she valued and the types of relationships she had.
When you go through a stash of old family photos I encourage you to take some time and think about these sorts of questions.
Questions:
- What have you learned about your family from the photos that your ancestors saved?
- How do you imagine the relationship between Maryann and Rukamp and, presumably, her grandfather?
- What is your favorite family photo with a grandparent and grandchild?
- What photos are missing from your growing archive that you wished you had?
Do you have an old photograph or a genealogical story that you would like to share? I am happy to consider guest submissions for possible Pic of the Week or other blog posts in the future. Send an email to info@psychogenealogist.com for more information.
