The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#10)
Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to provoke thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.
This week's photograph comes from the same collection as The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#6) - Mom, 1945. The date on the back of #10 says 1953. It is unclear if these pictures are related in anyway.
The back of the photo reads:
Ragar, Lina + Ragar Jr. age taken at Grandma's Sept. 1953
What drew me most to this photo was the name, Ragar. I had never heard of that name before and it does not appear to be very popular. In fact, the only information I was able to find was that it an uncommon masculine first name used in Kurdish.
An ancestry.com search for first name"Ragar" turned up only a handful of possibilities. None of them were connected to a spouse named Lina, or a son also named Ragar.
The woman's dress, the cars, and the man's tight white t-shirt and blue jeans scream 1950s. The foothills suggest a Western locale? It appears to be warm. The older woman tucked between the cars (is that "Grandma"?) is wearing a sleeveless dress. The boy is wearing shorts. For Fall (i.e. "Sept") this family is dressed rather summery.
Questions:
- Who is Ragar and where is his presumable son?
- What feelings are evoked in you as you look at this family photograph?
- Is that "grandma" peeking from behind the cars? What is her story?
- Where is this boy today and what is his story?
Do you have an old photograph or a genealogical story that you would like to share? I am happy to consider guest submissions for possible Pic of the Week or other blog posts in the future. Send an email to info@psychogenealogist.com for more information.
