The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#12)

Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.

What is not to love about this week's photo? Here is what caught my eye:

  • A fedora and tie wearing man slinging what appears to be a jug of wine over his shoulder.
  • The scowl on the face of the woman second from the left.
  • An old man holding a giant watermelon.
  • A tall and awkwardly cropped man holding two other melon like objects.
  • The pleasant smiles of the other two woman.
  • The fact that they all seem to be starring into the sun.

I have no idea who these people are and there are no distinguishing markings on the back. Something about the photo suggests 1940s, but it could be later. I can't tell if it is meant to be a humorous photo or not, but I find it charming.

Questions:

  • Who are these people and what are they up to?
  • Are they husbands and wives? Neighbors? Siblings? Farmers or casual gardeners and wine makers?
  • Do you think the photo was meant to be humorous?
  • How did your family express their playfulness or humor through photos?
  • What are they thinking and feeling?
  • When do you think this photo was taken?

Do you have an old photograph or a genealogical story that you would like to share? I am happy to consider guest submissions for possible Pic of the Week or other blog posts in the future. Send an email to info@psychogenealogist.com for more information.
