The Psychogenealogist Pic of the Week (#26)

Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.

Here is one from my personal collection, taken just this week at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, MI.

This is the Grzeskowiak family plot. Wojciech (aka, Albert) and Agnieszka (Agnes) Grzeskowiak (as far as I know pronounced "gresh-ko-viyak") are my 2nd great grandparents. Originally from Poland, Albert was born in 1849 and died in 1931. You can read about him and the story of his being stabbed in the streets of Detroit here.

Agnes (Szaroleta) Grzeskowiak was born in 1854 and died in 1918. Here's a post about how I discovered her Polish birth certificate: How to Use Facebook to Boost Your Genealogy Research: A Case Study.

There are several other Grzeskowiaks, some with their spouses, buried in this same area. On Find a Grave (findagrave.com) there are 18 listed Grzeskowiaks listed as interred at Mt. Olivet. I believe I am related to most of them, though probably not all of them.

It was a beautiful day for my first trip to this cemetery. Here is a short video that documented my visit.

Mt. Olivet is a beautiful, old cemetery on the east side of Detroit, MI. THE expert on this cemetery is Ceil Wendt Jensen, author of the Images of America book: Detroit's Mount Olivet Cemetery

Do you think you might have some relatives at Mt. Olivet? You can use the search box below to see if there is a listing over at Find a Grave.

Questions:

  • Who is the oldest known relative whose final resting place you have visited?
  • How do you feel about visiting cemeteries?
  • Where are some of your favorite cemeteries?
  • How does your family mourn and memorialize loved ones who have died?

Do you have an old photograph or a genealogical story that you would like to share? I am happy to consider guest submissions for possible Pic of the Week or other blog posts in the future. Send an email to info@psychogenealogist.com for more information.
