Pic of the Week (#123) - "See you soon. Lots of Love - Cécile" (France, 1933)
Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.
Here is a beautiful French postcard showing a young woman in a green and gold dress and holding a bouquet of purple flowers. She has a stunning gaze.
I have no idea who the woman on the postcard is. It does not appear to have been mailed, but there is a French inscription on the back. It is dated September 11, 1933.
I sent this postcard along with some others for some professional translation. Here are the results.
Here are some questions to consider as you think about this postcard.
Questions:
Who is Cécile and what is her story?
Who is she writing to and what is their relation?
Who is Louis?
Do you think the translation is an accurate one?
Is Louis on military “leave”?
Who are Yda and Denise and what are their stories?
Who do you think is depicted on the front of the postcard?
What do you think, wonder, and feel as you look at the postcard and read the words?
I would love to hear your thoughts about these questions or other ideas that occur to you about the postcard. Please feel to leave a comment below!
