Pic of the Week (#143) - "The Doctor Says: You Need Some Change" (Postcard, 1916)
Every Friday The Psychogenealogist shares a "Pic of the Week." The intent is to encourage thought and imagination about the spaces where psychology, genealogy, and history converge.
I am not entirely sure what the front of this 1916 postcard means. It shows, what looks to me, like a woman (note the shoes and blush) dressed in a men’s green suit and gold vest. She’s looking at another woman, more traditionally dressed in a pink pant suit.
It reads:
The Doctor says: You Need Some Change (So Do I.)
It appears to be postmarked from Pierz, Minnesota. The handwritten date at the the top reads Oct 16, 1916. The addressee is:
Miss Grace Hall
Little Falls
Minnesota
Pierz is a small town about 15 miles due east of the larger Little Falls.
The back reads:
Dear Cousin,
Ma said that
you wanted to come
over when Franks got
home. If you want to
wait till Frid. (Friday?) I’m coming
in (with?) A. Gassert and Mag. H.
in Joe Newman’s car then
you can (ride?) out with
Joe he will be along,
(TOP OF OTHER SIDE OF CARD)
We will be at the house at
9.30 or 10
Your cousin,
??
I think that is a pretty close transcription of the card, but I am sure there are some mistakes. What do you think?
Do you like genealogical puzzles? This would be a good one to tackle. There are some very good clues that would be relatively easy to research. I would love to find a living descendant of someone connected to this postcard!
Questions:
Who is the writer?
Is the transcription provided above accurate?
Who are Frank, A. Gassert, Mag. H., and Joe Newman?
What kind of car does Joe drive?
Whatever happened to Miss Grace Hall?
What sort of message is intended on the front of this postcard?
What do you think, feel, and wonder about as you look at this postcard?
