Michael John Hanley Jr. (1924-2015), Letters of Recommendation (1944) - Family Artifact Challenge (Day 24)
I always knew my grandfather, Michael John Hanley Jr. (1924-2015), to be an outstanding person. These letters of recommendation from 1944 are evidence that this was a life long quality of his.
To Whom It May Concern:
This is to recommend to you Michael J. Hanley. Michael graduated from St. Michael’s high school in 1942. He is honest, capable and trustworthy. He was active in school activities and also a leader in athletics. I think that Michael has an excellent character.
His family background is very good. His parents are respected members of this community. I recommend Michael J. Hanley very highly to you.
Sincerely yours,
Rev. John D. Slowey
To Whom It May Concern:
The subject of this letter, Michael Hanley, has been an acquaintance of mind for the past eight years. I am well acquainted with his family and background.
This young man has always been industrious, capable and well liked. He was a good student in school, a fine athlete, and a loyal supporter at all times. Honest, thorough, and considerate, he has had excellent home training and is morally one of the most responsible boys I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.
These characteristics together with Michael’s all around ability cause me to recommend him highly.

To whom it may Concern
I have known Michael Hanley for seven years. He was a member of my Scout Troop of which I was Scoutmaster.
My association with him in and out of scouting proved to me he is very alert to what is going on about him, and very capable of adapting himself to the things to do or asked of him to do.
He is of clean living (mind and body), honest, and his integrity is beyond reproach.
He is an all American Boy with American Ideals and the understanding of what they stand for.
I recommend him to any branch of the Armed forces he desires, knowing he will do his utmost to carry his full share to completion.
Sincerely
John D. Mueller
