James Walter Rhoads (1902-1969)
James Walter Rhoads (1902-1969) is my 1st cousin 2x removed. He was actually the nephew of my great grandmother, Ida Rhoads Sears (1900-2002). Ida incorrectly labelled this card as “Brother”, probably because she confused him with her actual brother (and James W’s father), James Henry Rhoads (1879-1964). As they were about the same age and lived in the same city (Flint, MI) I imagine they felt more like siblings.

Amanda and James were siblings of my great grandmother, Ida Rhoads Sears (1900-2002). I believe Ida mislabelled this card as “nephew” because there was, indeed, another Leo Campbell who was her nephew who died as a child in 1923.

Dwain E. Smith (1925-2004) was known by me, affectionately, as “Uncle Smitty”. He was married to my great aunt, Margaret “Peggy” Sears Smith (1928-2008). Aunt Peggy was the younger sister of my grandmother, Betty Grace Sears Hanley (1924-1981). Uncle Smitty was a consummate fly-fisherman and it was rare to see him without his trademark pipe. Born in Ohio, he spent most of his life living in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was an Army Veteran (WWII) and is buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan (Kalamazoo County).

We have her to thank for many of the photos and details of our family’s story. She was a lifelong resident of Flint, Michigan. As her prayer card suggests, she celebrated our Irish roots.

I don’t have an exact marriage date, but I presume it was shortly after Ella died. Emma was about 53 when she married Anthony who I imagine needed help raising the children.

My great grandmother, Ida Rhoads Sears (1900-2002), incorrectly identified this card as her sister-in-law, another Margaret Campbell. Two of Ida’s siblings (one brother and one sister), married two Cambell siblings which adds to the confusion.

Francis P. Sullivan (1930-1995)
I really have no idea if or how Francis P. Sullivan (1930-1995) is connected to my family. This funeral prayer card was included in a group from my Hanley side. My second great grandmother was Ellen Sullivan (Kelly) Hanley (1850-1938). It is possible that Francis is connected to that part of the family. It is also possible that this was a family friend. Here is his obituary from the Midwest Augustinians website:

Sebastian Ratz (1898-1973)
Sebastian Ratz (1898-1973) is a recently discovered cousin of mine. He is my 1st cousin 3x removed if the info I have in my tree is correct. I found a 1923 passenger ship manifest that lists a Sebastian Ratz coming from Germany to join his “Uncle Heinrich Ratz” of Flint, Michigan. This appears to be my 2nd great grandfather, Henry Peter Ratz (1867-1934).

1947 Prayer by Eugene Arthur Sears (1932-2021)
This wasn’t for a funeral, but it is a unique prayer card written by my great uncle, Eugene Arthur Sears (1932-2021), on February 9, 1947 (his 15th birthday). It reads:
One more day’s work for Jesus
One less of life for me.
But heaven is nearer
And Christ is dearer
Than yesterday to me.
- Gene
Soon he would be off to seminary school and in 1958 he was ordained a Catholic Priest.
