Today my wife and I celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary. We stand on the shoulders of giants!
This is the wedding invitation of my wife’s maternal grandparents, Laurence A. Petit Jr. (1925-2007) and Muriel Joy Gregory Petit (1930-2014). Beautifully framed, it hangs proudly in our home. They were married on October 5th, 1951.
Here is a closeup:
It reads:
Mrs. Florence Gregory requests the hounour of your presence at the marriage of her daughter Muriel Joy to Mr. Laurence Arville Petit on Friday the fifth of October at seven thirty o’clock in the evening. One thousand nine hundred fifty-one. Plymouth Congregational Church. Coconut Grove, Florida.

I had the great joy of knowing Muriel (aka “Granny”). Her spirit was infections; her laugh legendary. No stranger to adversity, she strived (and succeeded) to live a life that matched her middle name. We are blessed that she got to meet both of our children, her first great grandchildren.
Unfortunately I was never able to meet Laurence (aka “Larry”), as he died a few months before our wedding. I was able to have a short phone conversation with him around the time our our engagement. I am sure we would have gotten along splendidly. I have, though, gotten to know him through the stories that are still affectionately told about his life and character.
There are qualities of both of our children that embody the personalities of Granny and Larry.
