Philadelphia Jewish Hospital School of Nursing (Einstein Hospital) 1928

FIND THEIR STORY #1

I am starting a new blog series featuring found photos with personal identification details. These posts won't be detailed investigations into the photos or family history; instead, I will give enough context for readers to do their own research. This project will also allow me to create and share more content, which I have missed lately. We'll see how it develops.

Let’s start with this neat photo. You will see that it appears to be a class photo of nurses at “Einstein Hospital” which, at the time, was called The Philadelphia Jewish Hospital School of Nursing.

Here is the back. I have tried to adjust the contrast to make it more legible.

The top corner says “Einstein Hospital” and I believe “Tabor Rd Photo” (maybe). In the bottom left corner it has a date of 5/30/1928.

The list of “My Classmates” includes:

  • Ida Bermann

  • Babe Hirsch

  • Claire Skuben

  • Fannie Beatman

  • Miriam Guffy

  • Selma Schoenstadt

  • Kathry Rubenstein

  • Ethel Weinberger

  • (and erased name maybe"?)

  • Helen Ruff

  • Mary Buckman

  • Mollie Batt

  • “Bubba” Dot Ellis

  • “Red” Rose (M?) Narrow

  • Rose Wolfson

  • Frances Ash

  • Estelle Roos

  • Min Solovey

  • Florence Lineweber

  • Erma Yerq (g?)

  • Sarah Tolly

  • Thelma Miller

  • Selma Schoenfeld

Here is the photo cropped of it’s border.

I posted this photo on it’s own a while back on The Psychogenealogist Facebook Page and an astute reader commented the following:

What is now the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia was at that time the Philadelphia Jewish Hospital School of Nursing. I recognize most or all of the names written on back as Jewish…My grandmother’s aunt graduated from this nursing school in 1931, just three years after this photo was taken. My grandmother graduated from the same nursing school in 1950….You’ll notice that “Tabor” is written on back. That was the name of the residence where the nursing students lived. This photo is really a treasure. Thank you for sharing.

Are there any names here that you recognize or would like to research more? Please feel free to send an email or comment below.
